Which app fits your store
Choose Essential Loyalty if:
- You’re the one running loyalty, on top of everything else you already do
- You want VIP tiers, referrals and cart redemption on the free plan, not a $129 upgrade
- You want it running properly from week one, on a bill that never passes $79
- You want in-store rewards on Shopify POS without a $129 plan
Choose Joy Loyalty if:
- You need to prove the program’s return in hard numbers
- Your storefront is custom-built by developers rather than a Shopify theme
- Outside these two reasons, expect to pay $129 a month or more for features you won’t use
Setting up your program
Getting a working program running on Joy means deciding for yourself where to start. The earning rules, the rewards, the VIP tiers, and where any of it should show up on your site are all handled separately, with nothing walking you through what to set up first or what a sensible starting point looks like. VIP tiers only become available once you’ve moved to a paid plan, so even deciding to use them means upgrading before you can begin.
Essential pre-configures all three of those at once. The earning rules, the rewards and the VIP ladder are already set up with working defaults, and the storefront placements that see the most use, the widget, the product page and the cart, are already switched on. All that’s left is picking a reward rate and turning the app on in your live theme: two clicks, and the program is live.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because it launches in two clicks with everything pre-configured.
Not sure where to start?
Setup takes two clicks, but if you’d rather have it done together, Essential’s team will walk through picking a rate and turning on the right placements with you.
What you get on the free plan
The biggest gap here is VIP tiers: the part of a loyalty program customers actually notice, climbing toward better rewards the more they shop. Essential includes them on the free plan, with a real points multiplier that grows as a customer climbs. Joy charges $129 a month before a shop can offer them at all.
Joy’s free plan has genuinely improved: Klaviyo, analytics and member segmentation all moved onto it recently, where they used to sit behind a $29 upgrade. What’s still gated at $29 is the day-to-day running of the program itself: the loyalty page, product-page points, reward and points expiry, referral fraud protection, and Shopify Flow triggers. VIP tiers, cart redemption, account placements and Shopify POS all still need the $129 Advanced plan. Essential includes all of that, plus the reporting Joy just made free, on its own free plan.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because the free plan includes VIP tiers and real redemption surfaces, not just reports.
Redeeming rewards
The clearest difference is the cart. Essential lets customers redeem a reward right where they’re shopping, on the free plan. Joy charges $129 a month before a customer can do the same there. In your store with Shopify POS, it’s $10 on Essential against $129 on Joy, and for Shopify Plus stores wanting points at the actual checkout page, that’s $79 a month here against $499 on Joy.
Both apps offer a similar spread of reward types: fixed and percentage discounts, free shipping, free products, and store credit. Joy’s picker includes a working gift card, which Essential doesn’t have yet, while Essential lets the customer choose exactly how many points to put toward a discount. Reward variety isn’t the real gap between the two. Where a reward can actually be used, starting with the cart, is.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because rewards work in the cart for free instead of $129 a month.
Cost as you grow
| Orders a month | Essential Loyalty | Joy Loyalty |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | $0 | $0 |
| 500 | $10 | $29 |
| 1,500 | $24 | $129 |
| 5,000 | $79 | $429 |
| 8,000 | $79 | $549 |
| 17,000+ | $79 | Custom price |
Joy charges by how many orders you get, and every plan has a limit. Passing it means paying extra for each block of 100 orders, and nothing on Joy is ever truly unlimited. Essential pricing has order limits too, but passing one just moves the plan up automatically, with no extra fee, and the top plan is a flat $79 a month no matter how large you grow.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because the price never rises past $79, no matter the volume.
What does switching actually cost you?
Nothing on the bill, and no time offline: Joy keeps running while Essential is set up beside it, and it only goes off once you have tested a real order.
Getting help when you need it
Essential’s support is a real person on chat, 24/7, across every time zone (not a bot, not a ticket queue), and you can get the founder himself on a call. Joy keeps that kind of hands-on help for its higher-priced plans.
On the numbers, Essential holds a 5.0-star rating across 437 reviews, and Joy holds 4.9 stars across 1,700 reviews: a longer track record, and its reviewers do praise how fast it replies. Essential is the newer, smaller app of the two. What’s the same on both: a real person answering is something you can ask about before you install, and both apps’ review pages are the place to check it for yourself.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because 24/7 human support is part of every plan, including free.
Talk to a real person before you decide
Essential’s support is on chat right now, day or night, and the founder takes calls directly. Ask about your specific store before choosing either app.
Integrations and omnichannel
Of the three connections most shops reach for first, the picture has shifted. Klaviyo is free on both apps now, no longer a gap. Judge.me is free to connect on Essential; Joy’s own listing notes Judge.me itself needs a paid Judge.me plan to work, a cost that sits outside either app’s pricing. Shopify Flow is still $29 a month on Joy against free here. The clearest remaining gap is Shopify POS: $10 a month on Essential against $129 on Joy. Essential also sends its own reward and reminder emails without needing any integration connected at all, so many shops get real value before connecting anything.
Joy still goes further on raw breadth: around 25 integrations to choose from, most still behind its $29 or $129 plans, and a direct connection to subscription apps like Recharge, which Essential doesn’t have yet. A subscription renewal on Essential still earns points like any other order, it just can’t have a loyalty discount applied to it. If Essential is missing a connection you need, Essential’s partner program can build it on request.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because Shopify POS and Shopify Flow are free here, even with Klaviyo now free on both.
Control and flexibility
Both apps can now set a different earn rate by product or collection, but not at the same price. Essential’s version, a rate of zero excludes an item outright, useful for shops mixing high- and low-margin products, is on the $24-a-month Essential plan. Joy added the same kind of control through a separate Rule Engine that runs several earning programs at once, each targeted at specific products or collections with its own multiplier, but it needs the $129-a-month Advanced plan.
The program also protects merchants as they grow, not just tracks points. Referral fraud protection, new-email checks, no double rewards, purchase-gated payouts, is free on every plan; Joy prices similar protection at $29 a month. Points expiry costs $24 a month here against $29 on Joy, both off by default.
Products and customers can be excluded by tag on every plan, and reward combinations now follow Shopify’s own order, product and shipping rules, so a reward can’t stack into an unintended markdown. Joy’s one remaining edge here: capping how many points a single customer can earn in a period.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because a different rate by product costs $24 a month here against $129 on Joy.
How it looks in your store
Essential’s on-site blocks are designed to look right the moment you turn them on: eight polished presets with colour, corner and spacing controls, built to sit inside a theme rather than look bolted on. A shop that never touches a style setting still gets a widget, product banner and cart box that look like part of the store, not an add-on. Essential can also show a points badge on every product card across collection pages and search results, not just on a single product’s own page, for $24 a month.
Both apps also let you go further with your own CSS if the presets aren’t enough. The two editors cover similar ground, though Essential’s is generally the easier of the two to use. Translations work differently: Essential’s storefront text can be translated into any language a shop sells in, filled in by the merchant, while Joy ships with 38 languages built in. One is unlimited but takes the merchant’s own work; the other is fixed but ready-made.
Winner: Essential Loyalty, because the defaults look finished without any setup work.
Analytics and reporting
Joy can tell you whether members spend more than non-members, what a customer is worth over time, and how points liability is trending, real, useful numbers, and recently moved the whole suite, including member segmentation, onto its free plan. Essential shows nine simple numbers and no charts, free on every plan too, but can’t yet make that same member-vs-non-member comparison.
Both apps count “revenue from loyalty” generously, so treat either number as an upper bound rather than a fact.
Winner: Joy Loyalty, because it shows member-vs-non-member performance, and it’s free now too.
Developer tools and APIs
If your storefront is custom-built or headless rather than a standard Shopify theme, Joy sells directly for that: a documented REST API, webhooks, a JavaScript kit, Hydrogen headless support and multiple shops on one account, all self-serve on its $499 plan.
Essential is built to work fully out of the box, so most shops never need custom development. When a shop does have a genuine custom requirement, Essential’s partner program builds it on request, through a conversation rather than published self-serve documentation. For a store that’s already headless or custom-built, Joy is the stronger choice here.
Winner: Joy Loyalty, because it publishes a self-serve API and headless support.
Have a custom or headless requirement?
Essential doesn’t publish a public API today. If a store has a genuine custom need, the partner program looks at building it, worth a conversation before assuming Joy is the only option.
Switching from Joy to Essential Loyalty
Switching is simpler than it sounds. Your customers and their order history never leave Shopify, and Joy can keep running while Essential is set up right beside it, so your program is never offline during the move.
Both apps now help with the switch on every plan, including free. Essential’s team imports your customer balances, checks everything landed correctly, and gets the program live before Joy is switched off, usually within an afternoon.
Ready to switch from Joy?
Most stores move in an afternoon. Balances, tiers and birthdays carry across, and Essential’s team stays alongside for the whole move, on every plan, including free.
Questions people ask before switching
- Essential Loyalty, if you want VIP tiers, referrals and in-cart redemption without paying to unlock them: all three are on its free plan, and unlimited orders cost $79 a month. Joy is still the better pick if you need reports comparing members with non-members, or a developer API.
- Essential Loyalty includes VIP tiers, referrals, reports and cart redemption on its free plan, and stops at $79 a month no matter how large a store grows. Joy gates VIP tiers and cart redemption at $129, and its order-based billing adds a fee for every 100 orders past the plan limit; Klaviyo, analytics and member segmentation are free on both apps now. Joy’s own advantage sits higher up: deeper member reporting than Essential offers, free, plus a developer API at $499 a month.
- Yes, generally. Joy holds a 4.9-star rating across roughly 1,700 reviews, and its reporting, developer tools and social-reward features are genuinely deep. The trade-off is gating and defaults: VIP tiers, cart redemption and Shopify POS all sit behind its $129-a-month plan, and every customer notification ships off until you turn each one on by hand.
- No. Joy’s free plan has basic points, a widget and the first 30 referrals. VIP tiers need the $129-a-month plan. Essential includes five VIP levels, with a real points multiplier, on its free plan.
- $429. That’s $129 for the plan plus $300 in extra order fees. Essential is $79 at any order volume, with no extra fees ever.
- Yes. Export from Joy and upload the file into Essential’s CSV import. Balances, lifetime points, VIP tier, birthday and phone number all come across, on every plan including free. Joy also offers guided migration free on every plan now.
- Past activity, used-up rewards, and who referred whom. Joy’s own export leaves those out too, so nothing is lost that switching the other way would have kept.
- Yes, as long as your export includes the tier column. You can also move anyone to any tier by hand afterwards.
- For points on the actual checkout page, yes. That’s Shopify’s rule for both apps. Without Plus, turn points into store credit instead: it comes off the bill automatically at checkout, on any Shopify plan.
- Reports, mainly: comparing members with non-members, lifetime value, and cohort retention, all free now. Its top plan also has a developer API for custom storefronts, and it can set a spending minimum or cap what one customer earns, which Essential can’t yet.
- Free for good, up to 250 orders a month. Paid plans come with a 14-day trial. Passing 250 orders on the free plan pauses the program. You’re never charged for it.
- An afternoon, for most shops. Keep Joy running while Essential is set up beside it, and switch it off only once you’ve tested a real order.
