Smile.io alternative with free VIP tiers

Smile is a long-standing loyalty app with a deep list of integrations, but most of what makes a program feel complete, like VIP tiers, points on product pages and points expiry, sits on its higher plans. Essential Loyalty gives you the full program from day one, with rewards that work right in the cart and a real person on support around the clock.

Which app fits your store

Essential Loyalty Program & Rewards app icon.

Choose Essential Loyalty if:

  • You want VIP tiers, cart redemption and Klaviyo from day one, without upgrading
  • You want points expiry, store credit and points on every product card without jumping to a top plan
  • You’re growing fast and want a bill that stays predictable as orders climb
  • You want a real person on chat 24/7, on every plan including free
Smile: Loyalty & Rewards.

Choose Smile if:

  • Most of your sales happen in a physical store and you want Shopify POS on a free plan
  • You need gift card, subscription or double-points-weekend rewards, or one of Smile’s many integrations
  • Outside these, expect to move to Smile’s top self-serve plan before VIP tiers are even an option

Setting up your program

Smile’s setup is a short wizard: pick an earning rate, set your colours, switch on the theme embed, and the floating panel is live. It’s quick, and plenty of reviewers say so. What it launches is the panel on its own. VIP tiers and points on product pages come with higher plans, and there’s no cart block at all, so a fuller program means upgrading before you can build it.

Essential pre-configures the whole program at once. The earning rules, the rewards and the VIP ladder already have working defaults, and the storefront placements that see the most use, the widget, the product page and the cart, are already switched on. All that’s left is picking a reward rate and turning the app on in your live theme: two clicks, and the full program is live.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because both launch fast, but Essential launches with VIP tiers and cart and product-page placements already on, for free.

Not sure where to start?

Setup takes two clicks, but if you’d rather have it done together, Essential’s team will walk through picking a rate and turning on the right placements with you.

What you get on the free plan

The biggest gap here is VIP tiers: the part of a loyalty program customers actually notice, climbing toward better rewards the more they shop. Essential includes them on the free plan, as many tiers as you want, with a real points multiplier that grows as a customer climbs. Smile keeps them for its top self-serve plan, so a shop has to commit to a much bigger bill before it can offer them at all.

Smile’s free plan covers the basics: points, referrals, discount and free-shipping rewards, full branding and Shopify POS. Integrations, Klaviyo included, start on its first paid plan, and only one at a time. Analytics, points on product pages, store credit, points expiry and points on the account page each unlock a plan or two higher. Essential includes VIP tiers, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Judge.me, product-page and cart placements and basic analytics on its own free plan.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because the free plan includes VIP tiers, integrations and real redemption surfaces that Smile spreads across three paid plans.

Redeeming rewards

The clearest difference is the cart. Essential lets customers redeem a reward right where they’re shopping, on the free plan. Smile has no cart redemption on any plan: customers redeem in the Smile panel, get a discount code, and apply it themselves at checkout. Its cart-page reminders don’t appear at all on stores that use a cart drawer. Shopify Plus stores can show points on the checkout page itself with either app, but Smile only offers it on its top self-serve plan.

Reward variety is close. Both apps offer fixed and percentage discounts, free shipping, free products and store credit, which comes on a lower plan here. Smile also offers gift card and subscription rewards, which Essential doesn’t have yet. Where Smile clearly wins is in-store: Shopify POS works on its free plan, while Essential includes it from the first paid plan.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because rewards work in the cart for free, where Smile has no cart redemption at all.

Cost as you grow

Orders a month Essential Loyalty Smile
250 $0 $15
500 $10 $15
1,500 $24 $199
5,000 $79 $699
8,000 $99 $1,024
17,000+ $99 $1,474+

Both apps count every order your store takes, so the table compares like for like. Smile’s plans have hard order limits, and once a store outgrows its top self-serve allowance, every extra block of orders adds to the bill. If you want VIP tiers, Smile’s starting point is that top plan, whatever your volume.

In fairness, Smile has pricing protection, so a single spike month like Black Friday won’t blow up the bill. Essential pricing has order limits too, but passing one simply moves you up a plan, with no per-order fees, and the top plan covers unlimited orders at one flat price.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because the bill stops climbing at one flat price for unlimited orders, while Smile’s keeps growing with every extra order.

What does switching actually cost you?

Nothing on the bill, and no time offline: Smile keeps running while Essential is set up beside it, and it only goes off once you have tested a real order. Paid plans also carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Getting help when you need it

Essential’s support is a real person on chat, 24/7, across every time zone (not a bot, not a ticket queue), on every plan including free, and you can get the founder himself on a call. Smile offers in-app chat and email on every plan, and keeps priority support and a dedicated launch plan for its enterprise-level plan.

Smile has been on the Shopify App Store since 2014 and holds 4.9 stars across more than 4,600 reviews: a far longer track record, and many of its reviewers praise support agents by name. Essential holds 5.0 stars across 488 reviews and is the newer, smaller app of the two. Both apps’ review pages are the place to check this for yourself.

If a paid plan isn’t right for you, Essential refunds it within 30 days. Smile turns unused time into account credit when you change plans, but doesn’t refund it.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because 24/7 human support is part of every plan, including free, and paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Integrations and omnichannel

Smile’s integration list is one of the longest in the category, from Klaviyo and Judge.me to Gorgias, Loox, Recharge and Yotpo. The catch is how many you can switch on at once: none on the free plan, one on the first paid plan, two on the next, and unlimited only on its top self-serve plan. A shop running Klaviyo and a review app has to upgrade twice just to connect both.

Essential connects the three most shops reach for first, Klaviyo, Omnisend and Judge.me, plus Shopify Flow, free and all at the same time. Smile’s Judge.me connection also needs a paid Judge.me plan, a cost on top of Smile’s own. Both apps send their own loyalty emails with no integration connected at all: six on Essential, nine on Smile. If Essential is missing a connection you need, such as Recharge, Essential’s partner program can build it on request.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because Klaviyo, Omnisend, Judge.me and Shopify Flow all run at once for free, where Smile limits how many you can connect until its top plans.

Control and flexibility

Earning rules are where the two apps differ most under the hood. Essential can set a different earn rate by product or collection, with a rate of zero excluding an item outright, useful for shops mixing high- and low-margin products. Smile has no per-product rate on any plan: it can exclude products from earning, and its base rate is fixed in whole points per one unit of currency, so a rule like 1 point per $10 isn’t possible.

Points expiry comes on a much lower plan here than on Smile, and reward expiry is on by default and free here. Referral fraud protection runs automatically on every plan of both apps. Smile’s edges here: double-points bonus events, and capping how often a customer can earn for an action, both on its higher plans.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because points expiry comes far earlier here, and per-product earn rates aren’t available on Smile at all.

How it looks in your store

Smile’s branding controls are strong on every plan, including free, and its panel is polished. What it limits is where loyalty can appear: on its lower plans, the panel and a loyalty page are the only places. Points on product pages, the account page and its Loyalty Hub all come with higher plans.

Essential’s on-site blocks are designed to look right the moment you turn them on: eight polished presets with colour, corner and spacing controls, and the widget, product banner and cart box all ship on the free plan. Essential can also show a points badge on every product card across collection pages and search results, which Smile doesn’t offer. Translations work differently: Essential’s storefront text can be translated into any of 180+ languages, filled in by the merchant, while Smile ships 24 languages translated automatically. One is broader but takes the merchant’s own work; the other is narrower but ready-made.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because loyalty shows up on the product page, cart and account for free, where Smile keeps the same places for higher plans.

Analytics and reporting

Smile’s free plan includes activity lists, points, orders and customers, rather than analytics. Dashboards come with its first paid plan, ROI, lifetime value and member-vs-non-member comparisons a plan higher, and benchmarks against other Smile stores on its top self-serve plan.

Essential shows the core numbers free on every plan, and its advanced analytics, ROI, customer lifetime value and member segmentation, come on the Growth plan, with far more orders included than Smile’s equivalent. Smile’s one remaining edge is benchmarking your program against other stores.

Both apps count “revenue from loyalty” generously, so treat either number as an upper bound rather than a fact.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because basic analytics are free here, and the advanced reports come with far more orders included.

Developer tools and APIs

Both apps now offer an API. Smile keeps its API for an enterprise plan billed yearly, alongside a JavaScript SDK, custom earning actions and a data warehouse sync. Essential’s API comes with its unlimited plan, billed monthly with no annual contract. For a genuinely custom requirement, Essential’s partner program can build on top of it with you.

Winner: Essential Loyalty, because API access doesn’t need an enterprise contract.

Switching from Smile to Essential Loyalty

Switching is simpler than it sounds. Your customers and their order history never leave Shopify, and Smile can keep running while Essential is set up right beside it, so your program is never offline during the move.

Export your customers and points balances from Smile, and Essential’s team imports them, checks everything landed correctly, and gets the program live before Smile is switched off, usually within an afternoon, on every plan including free. One UK merchant who had run Smile for five years described the move as smooth, with better functionality at a lower cost.

Ready to switch from Smile?

Most stores move in an afternoon. Balances, tiers and birthdays carry across, and Essential’s team stays alongside for the whole move, on every plan, including free.

Questions people ask before switching

Essential Loyalty, if you want VIP tiers, cart redemption and Klaviyo without paying to unlock them: all three are on its free plan, and the price stays flat once you reach unlimited orders. Smile is still the better pick if you need Shopify POS on a free plan, gift card or subscription rewards, or one of its many integrations.
Essential Loyalty includes VIP tiers, cart redemption, Klaviyo, Omnisend, Judge.me and basic analytics on its free plan, and its price stops climbing once you reach unlimited orders. Smile spreads the same features across three paid plans: integrations one or two at a time on the lower plans, product-page points and store credit in the middle, and VIP tiers, points expiry and checkout redemption at the top, with extra charges as orders grow. Smile’s own advantages: free Shopify POS, a longer integration list and track record, and gift card and subscription rewards.
Yes, generally. Smile holds a 4.9-star rating across more than 4,600 reviews, has been on the Shopify App Store since 2014, and won a 2026 Shopify Build Award. Its branding controls are polished and Shopify POS works on its free plan. The trade-off is gating: VIP tiers, points expiry and account-page points sit on its top self-serve plan, and every integration, Klaviyo included, needs a paid plan.
No. VIP tiers come only with Smile’s Growth plan, its top self-serve tier; the free plan and the two plans above it don’t include them. Essential includes VIP tiers, with a real points multiplier, on its free plan.
$699: the Growth plan plus extra charges for the orders past its limit. Essential is $79 at the same volume, with no per-order fees ever.
Yes. Export your customers and points balances from Smile and upload the file into Essential’s CSV import. Balances, lifetime points, VIP tier, birthday and phone number all come across, on every plan including free.
Past activity, used-up rewards, and who referred whom. Discount codes customers already redeemed in Smile stay active in Shopify after you uninstall it, so nobody loses a reward they’ve already claimed.
Yes, as long as your export includes the tier column. You can also move anyone to any tier by hand afterwards, and on Essential the tiers themselves are free.
For points on the actual checkout page, yes. That’s Shopify’s rule for both apps, and Smile also needs its top self-serve plan for it. Without Plus, turn points into store credit instead: it comes off the bill automatically at checkout, on any Shopify plan, and it’s on a lower plan here than on Smile.
Shopify POS on the free plan, a longer integration list including Recharge and Gorgias, gift card and subscription rewards, double-points bonus events, more built-in emails, benchmarks against other stores, and a much longer track record.
Free for good, up to 250 orders a month. Paid plans come with a 14-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Passing the free limit pauses the program. You’re never charged for it.
An afternoon, for most shops. Keep Smile running while Essential is set up beside it, and switch it off only once you’ve tested a real order.
